"This book offers teachers classroom-proven approaches to help manage a wide variety of student behavior problems. It is highly recommended as a guide to managing all student behaviors, not just those that are disruptive, without the hype. This is a great resource for all educators especially special education. The author focuses on six essential life skills: attachment, belonging, self-regulation, collaboration, contribution, and adaptability. If you focus on these, your behavior issue will likely disappear. Also provides excellent strategies for behavior assessments."
Review: Book New Inc. - June 1, 2012
Bilmes, an independent early childhood consultant who is associated with a center for child and family studies, details six essential life skills (attachment, belonging, self-regulation, collaboration, contribution, and adaptability) young children need to learn and strategies and activities early childhood educators can use to help strengthen them. She argues that building life skills is more productive than punishing or rewarding behavior and shows how to help challenging children while strengthening the skills of all. This edition has a new chapter on children who need extra support, aligns each skill with early learning standards, and has been reorganized using the common structure of national social and emotional standards. It also addresses cultural awareness and its impact on child development. The skill of belonging, previously called "affiliation," has been expanded from only looking at friendships and the sense of belonging in the classroom to including belonging in the family and community. She includes discussion of empathy and more on the child's desire to grow and learn new things. (Annotation ©2012 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
