Explore the development of the social contacts of babies and young children

This video explores the development of the social contacts of babies and young children from the ages of four months to two and a half years. Observed in the "naturalistic" setting (as opposed to an artificial or experimental setting) of the Loczy home residence in Budapest, children go through three overlapping periods of development.

In the first period, the child discovers that "others" are not just objects, but are actually living beings. In the second period, the child discovers that "others" are actually people (i.e. creatures like himself). In the third period, after taking part in plan and common activities (not always devoid of passion and conflict), he begins to experience the first feelings of friendship with other children and finds pleasure in their company.
