ACTIVITY 1.2 DOUBLE TAP TO ZOOM ON PHONE OR TABLET Animal Hunt: Who Lives in Our Neighborhood? DESCRIPTION A good place to begin the study of animals is to observe the animals that live around the school. This activity can be implemented as a neighbor- hood walk or as a series of focused observations on the playground. Some children may have a good idea of the animals they may expect to find, but others may have had limited experiences outdoors. Teachers should be sure to remind children to look both above and below eye level. Some children do not realize that birds and insects are also animals. Digital photographs can help children remember the animals they discovered. UNDERSTANDING AND APPLYING SCIENCE STANDARDS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL 15
