30 Chapter 2 To her surprise, Dr. Jane then received weekly e-mail messages from Megan. They included scanned pictures of Megan and her mom along with warmly writ- ten memories. Megan remembered the consistent care of the adults surrounding her and had fond memories of her interactions with them. To her, the classroom space “always felt like home,” and she recalled the hugs and high fives and special traditions in the classrooms, as well as programming provided throughout the year. The same pictures that provided fond memories for Megan brought back difficult memories for Dr. Jane. At the end of the semester, Megan’s mom asked Dr. Jane to call. The call turned out enlightening and rewarding. It started with “Remember all those years you all were trying to tell me that Megan had issues? You see, I didn’t have what it took to listen at that point. However, in the first weeks of public school, I was jerked into reality, and services had to be developed for her along with a plan that has followed her to this day. I acted awful, and I am sorry, but know that because you and your staff hung in there for Megan and for me, she is the success that she is today.” We hope this full-circle moment inspires you to deliver each day to the chil- dren and families in your care. The lesson learned for Dr. Jane so many years ago was that she and the others at her program seized a collective vision of warmth, acceptance, consistency, manageable stress, security, respect, and commitment to one another and to the children and families they served. In addition, they provided opportunities for their children to experience life skills in the environ- ments that included rituals and routines, appropriate classroom arrangement, and strong management classroom strategies. Megan was given a fighting chance and was set on a successful trajectory—one that was cultivated in her early child- hood years. Megan, and the thousands of other children like her, need early childhood programs that embrace a collective vision to serve as their bedrock and that build the pillars of a supportive classroom environment.
