In chapter 1, we address why it’s important for teachers to observe children and what can be learned about them as they do so. In chapter 2, we look at the impact of early learning guidelines and calls for accountability on the observation and documentation processes. Chapter 3 focuses on how teachers do observation and documentation well, and chapter 4, on time-saving strategies to fit these processes into busy classroom life. The next two chapters focus on the assessment process: using observation and documentation to assess each child’s development (chapter 5), and sharing that assessment information (through port- folios, summary reports, and conferences) with families (chapter 6). Planning curriculum based on what is learned through observation and documentation is at the core of chapter 7, and chapter 8 shows how to build a case about each child. In chapter 9, we share sugges- tions for how to continue to grow as an observer and documenter. Remembering to delight in children’s development, celebrate their progress, and enjoy their very being are also emphasized. All of the chapters include observation notes of children in ac- tion so that you can review them and learn more about children’s development, see different ways of recording information, and draw conclusions about curricular strategies. We also share comments from early educators using observation and documentation. We hope that you will learn practical tips and helpful recommendations from their experiences. A CD–ROM with video clips accompanies this book. It is designed to go hand in hand with the book. At the end of every chapter, video clips are identified, and activities are suggested. Each chapter’s suggested activities provide you the opportunity to practice observation in your own work or family setting as well. Applying what you read, trying it out for yourself, analyzing what worked and didn’t work, and reflecting on what you learned through the obser- vation experience can be done with the video clips or in your own life settings.
