introdUCtion Considering the multitude of ways in which these technologies can be used,
each chapter is broken down into three sections. These sections are intended to
help teachers understand how a particular technology can be used to:
1. Support learning.
2. Assess student knowledge and teacher practice.
3. Exhibit learning.
Each chapter also includes forms you can use that encourage reflection on
and evaluation of strategies used in your classroom. I also utilize a technology
throughout the book for easy access to videos and forms: QR (quick reference)
codes provide you with an opportunity to view video clips for a deeper look
into these practices. The videos are intended to help you develop a firm under-
standing of the ideas and practices described throughout the book. Access the
videos by scanning the QR code with your smartphone or iPad, using a quick
reference application. If you don’t have easy access to this technology, you can
find the same video online at the URL listed next to each QR code. Similarly,
the forms at the end of each chapter also have QR codes. You can scan the QR
codes using a QR code-scanning application on a multi-touch mobile device
and instantly have the form ready for use. These forms can be imported into
many of the applications described throughout the chapters. If you are unable
to scan the codes, permission is granted on each form to photocopy it, or you
can access the forms electronically by following the URL address next to each
QR code.
The Toolbox Tips in the book are specific to each chapter’s technology. The
tips include questions that I recommend you consider when moving forward
with particular strategies or acquiring certain equipment. The overall goal
of the Toolbox Tips is to help you evaluate your unique situation and move
forward toward new strategies in a way that best suits your circumstances.
