Effective and practical solutions to respond to common skill lags and behavior challenges.

During the preschool years, children are beginning to gain cognitive skills and developing internal controls to regulate their emotions. While some young children may quickly learn these skills, other children may lack interest, find them difficult to perform, or exhibit challenging behaviors. Lags in skill development and challenging behaviors are normal but can still be improved upon. This book will help you identify and set goals for children who need more specific planning and support.

New to this second edition:

  • Early learning standard links to common skill lags and challenging behaviors
  • Research on brain development
  • Ideas for working with dual-language learners
  • Information on the impact of stress on children
  • A planning form to help you work with families to develop goal statements and a course of action
  • Reproducible handouts for parents that include suggestions for skills and behaviors children need to develop to ensure future learning and success

Super Resource!
When you work with children in any capacity, you will will see all kinds of emotions and all types of behaviors. Some good and some not so much. Some behaviors you can very simply put off as typical child development but other behaviors, like excessive hitting or inappropriate biting, will make you wonder if a child has deeper issues.

So This Is Normal?, by Deborah Hewitt, is a fantastic overview of behaviors seen in preschool children. You will learn about biting, agression, turn taking, attention getting, and so much more. This is a seriously valuable resource for all Early Childhood educators, whether you work in a center or family child care setting. With each topic you will find the typical behaviors, you will find the National standards, questions to determine how serious an issue is and ideas to deal with the issue in an appropriate manner. The book is extremely well organized and very easy to read and comprehend!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

This book is a must-read for anyone who has been challenged by the behavior of a young child. Ms. Hewitt offers practical strategies to the reader, which they can use to guide children through their experiences and interactions in the social world. I know I will use it again and again as a reference!

Normalcy proves to be a myth in youth. "So This is Normal Too?" is the second edition of Deborah Hewitt delving into her experience with early childhood education, as many parents fae children who develop in ways that they may not understand as perfectly normal and natural. Discussing brain development, the ins and outs of language, and helping children understand what they might not yet be able to. "So This is Normal Too?" is a fine pick for those concerned about early childhood development.
Review: January 2012 California Bookwatch - January 1, 2012
The second updated edition of So This is Normal Too is a pick for any early childhood education collection and provides many new enhancements to the original coverage of preschool education. It is intended to identify and set goals for kids who need more support and includes a range of updates, including early learning standard links to common skill lags, the latest research on brain development, revised reproducible handouts for parents, and much more.
