Review: September 2009 Book News Inc. - September 1, 2009
Written in accessible terms, this guide for early childhood care providers and parents shows how to recognize and deal with common symptoms and sign of illness in children. A brief introductory chapter explains general information about germs. Next, chapters on individual syptoms, such as sore throat, inflamed eyes, and rashes, contained checklists of signs, boxes on recognizing an emergency, patterns of specific illnesses and complications, and simple explanations of the role of germs and/or viruses. Practical advice is given for disinfecting the environment, and how long the sick child should be kept away from other children. A final chapter reviews facts about immunizations, and outlines everday practices that break the chain of infection. A list of web site resources is included. Stecklein is a pediatrician and clinical associate professor in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. (Annotation 2009 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
