More than one hundred ways to get children moving!

Creative dance is a great way to stimulate children's minds and muscles. With more than one hundred activities and two accompanying CDs of music by Debbie Clement, One, Two, What Can I Do? makes it easy to incorporate lively movement into your day. Each activity is an enjoyable way for children to engage in physical activity and establish lifelong healthy habits, which is especially important with children's increasingly sedentary lifestyles and rising childhood obesity rates.

This collection of movement activities, all reflecting common early childhood curriculum themes, enhances children's physical, social and emotional, kinesthetic, and cognitive learning during greetings, transitions, circle time, large-motor skill development, and quiet-down and good-byes. There are even ideas for dance and music presentations for families and friends. No previous dance experience is needed—each age-appropriate movement activity includes step-by-step directions, sample script to help you guide children, modifications for children with special needs, and tips to maximize learning. All you need to do is start moving!
Age Focus: 3-6.

Great Resource For Music and Movement Time,
I am so excited to let you know about a fantastic resource. If you’re an Early Childhood Educator, Family Child Care Provider, Homeschooler, or Early Elementary Teacher, you’ll love how this book complements your music and movement programs.

Complete with a two-CD set, you’ll find amazing activities that will have children jumping and moving in no time. My favorite section is Group Movement Explorations, as it incorporates four learning areas: language and literacy; numbers, shapes and patterns; science; and social studies. The book is LOADED with fun, easy-to-implement activities. All the details you need are included, as well as modification ideas -- perfect if you have children with special needs or a mixed age group. The songs on the CDs are cute, catchy, and easy to learn -- you can even download the lyrics!

If you work with 3- to 6-year-olds and are looking for a fun resource to add to your music and movement curriculum, I highly recommend this book!

Review by: Susan Gingrasso, The National Dance Education Organization Resource Review Di - October 7, 2011
The depth and scope of Connie Dow's understanding of dance in early childhood is shared in this lovely, simply written, and attractively designed resource. Debbie Clement's music is beautifully composed and performed. The NDEO membership will benefit from having access to One, Two, What Can I Do? Dance and Music for the Whole Day. The book:
  • Presents the scope of dance in early childhood to meet the children's physical and academic needs
  • Provides an excellent resource for new teachers and activities that can be adapted by experienced teachers
  • Advocates for dance in early childhood and how dance enhances all learning
  • Meets the needs of dance in early childhood pedagogy courses and community and studio teachers very well
  • Organized to make it easy and inviting to use

A delight to read, Connie's beautiful new book is packed with great ideas. Paired with Debbie's engaging music, One, Two, What Can I Do? will jumpstart and reassure those wonderful teachers who have rarely included movement in their classrooms. Our children are eager, waiting, and ready to be moved! This accessible and valuable book will inspire them.

Dow, who performs and teaches dance to young children and adults, presents 109 activities and two CDs of vocal and instrumental music to help teachers incorporate movement and physical activity into early childhood curriculum. Each has step-by-step instructions (including scripts) for choosing music, presenting the activity, and closing the session, in addition to advice for managing a group of children and ensuring their safety, modifications for students with special needs, and ways to maximize learning opportunities. They relate to starting the day; circle games; transition times; language and literacy, numbers, shapes, patterns, science, and social studies; large-motor skills for large spaces; relaxing and ending the day; and individual movement. No index has been provided. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
