Children are vulnerable in their early years, and, developmentally, they are susceptible to environmental hazards that may affect their potential for long, healthy lives. Even though you nurture children in the safest and most protective setting possible, it can be challenging to fully understand the steps to take to prevent inadvertent exposure to hazardous chemicals and conditions. Are children being exposed to asthma triggers? Is there lead in the water? Are there toxins in the plastic items being used? It is alarming how many common environmental conditions can threaten emerging immune, neurological, and endocrine systems. Some of these conditions are beyond our control, but, fortunately, many are easily managed.
The Go Green Rating Scale addresses these issues and is a way for you to evaluate your practices to create a healthier environment. It outlines a research-based, comprehensive set of standards for green child care. These standards are measurable and graduated, leading you up the scale toward the healthiest environment possible. Categories evaluated in the rating scale include:- air quality
- cleaning products
- pests and pesticides
- lead and other contaminants, such as plastics, formaldehyde, and fire retardants
- stewardship and green living, including recycling and waste reduction
"Go Green Rating Scale and its focus on safe and healthy conditions for children outside of the home is beneficial for the well being of our next generation. The guide successfully educates providers to clearly communicate their conscious values."

Awesome!
A very thorough scale that can be used for virtually all child care programs. I felt that it is not necessarily appropriate for a family child care program as a whole, but was able to use many parts, with very little adaptation needed. Very well organized and very easy language is used as well, with extensive explanation for each area.
One downfall is that although I try to be as "green" as possible in my household, there are certain things that, due to Provincial regulations, I cannot do (using natural cleaning solutions for example) but by using many of the ideas and recommendations in the Go Green Rating Scale for Early Childhood Settings I will do my part to be green!
A great resource that I highly recommend.

Review: Book News Inc. - February 1, 2010
Boise is a director of GreenCare for Children, a program that focuses on reducing environmental hazards in the child care industry. In this 11x8.5 inches resource for childcare administrators, he provides clear standards and a rating scale to assess and prevent exposure to harmful chemicals and conditions in early childhood settings, such as lead paint, pesticides, art supplies, and treated lumber in playgrounds. A separate guide, Go Green Rating Scale Handbook, sets out steps to achieve the standards. The program is based on the precautionary principle, which states that if there is strong evidence that something may be harmful, the risk should be reduced. (Annotation 2010 Book News Inc.
