I WANT TO BE STREET-SMART AND STREET-SAFE! children play, encourage them to talk about or clearly show what they are doing (“stop, look, and listen”). For child safety, have helmets available for children using riding toys. Prevent children’s access to vehicular traffic by using a fenced playground. In high traffic areas or near intersections, provide additional protection against vehicles entering the play area by erecting a concrete barrier or guard rails when possible. EVALUATION During play, do children pretend to be traffic safety helpers? Are children demonstrating increased awareness of traffic and safety? Are children talking about traffic safety? During play with riding toys, do children increasingly practice traffic rules (for example, stopping at stop signs)? During supervised walks or field trips, do children listen and follow adult instructions regarding traffic safety? 7
