WHEN VIEWING ON A TABLET OR MOBILE -- DOUBLE TAP TO ZOOM While many books about leadership focus on strategies for managing, per- suading, and motivating other people, Doing the Right Thing For Children focuses on these eight values and personal qualities. They are an interesting blend of unabashed values (human potential along side social justice is not often seen). He also does not hesitate to challenge readers to invest in becom- ing highly competent and deeply knowledgeable about themselves, about other people, and about the art and science of early care and education. Perhaps surprisingly he also speaks for the importance of fun and enjoyment and taking time in one’s career for ongoing personal renewal. But these are balanced. So, dear reader, I leave you with a question: are early childhood champions born, or are they made? What do you think? My answer, as we are so prone to say in the early childhood community, is “both/and.” As we learn in this book, Maurice’s path to leadership was developmental. It includes mentors who sup- ported and challenged him and a sequence of career opportunities at the District of Columbia Urban Teachers Corps, Tufts University, the US Department of Education, and the District of Columbia Public Schools, prior to his tenure with the Institute for Educational Leadership. He is also a prodigious reader, who peppers his speeches, conversations, and writings with references to child devel- opment, adult learning, organizational development, and a host of other topics. At the same time, I believe we are gifted with a few early childhood lead- ers who truly seem born to be champions. They seem to be wired up with a unique blend of insight and innovation, social and intellectual intelligence, and the charisma and magnetism to inspire and mobilize other people. In my mind, Maurice Sykes is one of these special people, and I thank him for his dedication in writing this fine book to guide current and emerging leaders to follow in his footsteps.
