They are served to stimulate the appetite. The appetizers provided in this chapter include recipes that are perfect for begin- ning cooks. The recipes are organized to provide simple recipes first, such as butter, and then more-complex recipes later, such as salsa. It is a good idea to start cooking foods that are familiar to children first, such as butter and whipped cream. Keep in mind the importance of encouraging children to use their senses as they cook. Let children use an electric hand mixer to feel the vibration and hear the blades mixing the food. Invite the children to observe changes that occur during the cooking process. And of course everyone will enjoy the aroma of the food! As they make these recipes, the children will enjoy their firsthand experiences while cooking. Getting the children involved allows us to use the teachable moments to reinforce many of the skills they are already learning. Take the time to write down what children are saying as they cook. Their thoughts and insights can be used to enhance your curriculum. COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL
