Blocks and Building
• Bring back your Summer’s Insects
blocks and other materials to use in
this Busy Honeybees theme. Once
again, include letter development in
your building area by showing the
children how to spell the word Insects,
using various curved and straight
blocks. Provide a poster with the
word Insects in a simple block font.
Show the children how to use curved
blocks for making curvy letters, such
as c and s, and how to use straight blocks for making straight let-
ters, such as t and I. Include a bucket of plastic toy insects for the
children to place along the top of the block word. As you remind
children that honeybees are insects, ask them, “What do all those
letters spell?” During their independent practice, praise them,
saying, “Wow, you spelled the word Insects. Great spelling!”
As a variation to this theme, show the children how to make
hexagons (a geometric shape of six sides) using straight blocks
of equal lengths. To expand children’s comprehension, reflect
with them on the Busy Honeybees math and art hexagon
• As a large group, write a descriptive list that uses the senses.
Explain to the children that great writers use their senses in
their writing to help their readers feel as though they are actually
there in the story. Explain that they can write about honeybees
using their senses. At the top of chart paper, write “Honeybees.”
Ask the children to describe what a honeybee looks and sounds
like. Next, write the heading “Comb Honey” on the chart. Ask
the children to describe what comb honey looks and tastes like.
Write the next heading, “Beeswax Lotion.” Ask the children to
describe what beeswax lotion looks and feels like. Finish by read-
ing all the descriptions you created as a class. Praise the children
for using their senses well in their writing.

examining math manipulatives.
